Santorum plans aggressive strategy against Romney (AP)

PORTLAND, Maine ? Rick Santorum is pursuing an aggressive strategy to challenge Mitt Romney in the state where the GOP presidential front-runner grew up.

Santorum said Sunday he could do "exceptionally well" in Michigan, the next state to host a presidential contest, along with Arizona, on Feb. 28, and where Romney's father was governor.

"We're going to spend a lot of time in Michigan and Arizona, and those are up next. And that's where we've really been focusing on," Santorum told ABC's "This Week." He suggested that a strong showing in those contests would make the presidential contest "a two-man race," dismissing current rivals Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul.

Santorum shrugged off his third-place finish Saturday in caucuses in Maine, where he didn't actively compete. He described Romney's recent criticism ? Romney is painting Santorum as a longtime Washington insider who pursued home-state projects ? as "desperate."

"You reach a point where desperate people do desperate things," said Santorum, a former representative and senator from Pennsylvania.

Romney captured Maine, state officials reported Saturday night, ending a three-state losing streak to Santorum. Santorum defeated Romney in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri on Tuesday.

There won't be another election until Arizona and Michigan and the next debate is 10 days away.

That's an unusually long break in a rapid-fire Republican race that featured six contests in the last two weeks alone. Romney and his rivals now have 17 days to raise cash and bolster their organizations for what's shaping up to be a long slog to the Republican nomination and the right to face President Barack Obama in November.

As Santorum eyes Romney's home state, Romney turns his attention to extending the huge cash advantage he enjoys over his rivals.

He left Maine to attend a West coast fundraiser Saturday night and issued a written statement to mark his victory in the low-turnout contest.

"I'm heartened to have the support of so many good people in this great state," Romney said. "The voters of Maine have sent a clear message that it is past time to send an outsider to the White House."

He's expected to spend much of next week courting fundraisers, while sprinkling in a handful of campaign events. He'll be in Arizona Monday evening.

In Maine, Romney won just a plurality of the vote, suggesting he still has much work ahead to unite GOP voters behind his candidacy.

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, a prominent voice among some conservatives, said Romney has work to do to convince GOP voters he's moved beyond his "pretty moderate past ... even in some cases a liberal past."

"I am not convinced, and I do not think the majority of GOP and independent voters are convinced," Palin said on Fox News Sunday.

Romney has been focusing increasing attention on social issues in recent days, perhaps with that goal in mind. He has been particularly aggressive in criticizing Obama's recent decision regarding contraception.

On Friday, after three weeks of controversy that pitted the nation's Catholic bishops against the White House, Obama revised his policy. Instead of requiring employers to cover contraception, the policy would now require insurance companies to provide free birth control coverage in separate agreements with workers who want it.

White House chief of staff Jack Lew defended the decision Sunday, noting that there is longer room for compromise.

"This is our plan," he said on CNN's "State of the Union."

The focus on social issues plays well for Santorum, who has long been considered a staunch cultural conservative. Those credentials helped fuel his success last week.

But he wasn't a factor in Maine, where Romney narrowly defeated Paul, capturing 39 percent to Paul's 36 percent of the vote, according to state Republican chairman Charlie Webster. Santorum and Gingrich, who didn't actively campaign in Maine, won 18 percent and 6 percent respectively.

Coming off last week's success, Santorum saw a surge in donations ? reporting bringing in $3 million over the three days immediately after last week's hat trick ? but is unlikely to catch Romney in the money race.

Santorum reported just $279,000 in the bank at the end of December, compared with $19.9 million for Romney. Gingrich had $2.1 million, but is still carrying substantial debt, while Paul reported $1.9 million.

Romney's relative success in Maine ? combined with his victory in the presidential straw poll at the Conservative Political Action Committee conference in Washington hours earlier ? may help enhance his cash advantage, despite some lingering skepticism among some conservatives.

The Maine vote totals reflected about 84 percent of the state's precincts. The contests scheduled for the coming days ? including an entire county that postponed its caucuses because of a snow storm ? will not be counted, according Webster, the state GOP chairman.

"We're not going to even accept the ballots. No one's going to keep track of them," he said, noting that those were the rules established by the party.

Romney's campaign has demonstrated skill and flexibility in winning a big state like Florida and eking out a victory in a low-turnout contest like Maine, where organization and voter contact are essential. Out of Maine's 258,000 registered Republicans, nearly 5,600 cast ballots in the weeklong voting.

But questions about Romney's durability as his party's presumed front-runner persist. Fully 61 percent of Maine voters selected a candidate other than Romney in a state practically in his backyard. And Romney's showing was down considerably from 2008, when he won 51 percent of the vote.

Speaking to supporters in Portland, Paul expressed disappointment that only a portion of the state's caucuses had counted toward the total.

"I wish all the caucuses had met today," Paul said, adding, "It's almost like we could call it a tie."

Romney won 11 delegates and Paul won 10, according to an analysis by The Associated Press. Santorum and Gingrich were shut out.

pest control seattle - How Local Pest Control Companies Detect Bed ...

As very tiny pests to begin with, bed bugs can be quite difficult to detect. Not only are they minuscule in size, but they quiet, sneaky, and most active at night, leaving you unaware of their presence until you wake up with bites. It is due to these factors that makes home pest inspection for bed bugs a tricky feat.

Seeing as bed bug pest control has proven to be challenging, your local pest control company will most likely have several different detection methods in order to make sure you accurately find and get rid of bed bugs.

Here is a look at five popular bed bug detection techniques:

1. Visual Inspection.

Yes, bed bugs are almost impossible to detect with the naked eye, but they do leave evidence around that proves their existence. Your local pest control company can advise you about certain home pest inspection tactics, such as using a bright flashlight to search for the bugs in cracks and seams of your upholstery and bed. Bed bugs also leave around small droppings that have a specific odor so any small brown dots on sheets or on a nearby wall are a sign that these pests are around. Make sure to check all crevices, such as under cushions, mattresses, and box springs, as bed bugs seem to thrive in those areas.

The problem with this visual detection method is that it requires a good amount of time and focus to hunt for signs of bed bugs, and there is no certainty that your findings will be accurate. Hence this is why other bed bug pest control detection methods have been created.

2. Passive devices.

Passive devices are set up in potential bed bug hot spots and are designed to not attract pests, but rather sit there \"passively\" until a bed bug wanders in and then traps or kills it. This has become a popular bed bug pest control tactic.

Detector devices, such as traditional glue traps, simply detect rather than kill the bed bugs. There are sticky trap and dry ice devices that are advanced, but also costly and require some skill to put together. Hardware stores carry many of these passive devices, but your local pest control company will usually have an even better selection of bed bug traps. Keeping all of this in mind, bed bug infestations cannot be eliminated solely with traps. Other treatments in conjunction with traps may be able to do the trick.

3. Active Devices.

On the other hand, active bed bug pest control devices actually do lure the pests with CO2, heat, and other chemicals and then monitored and tracked or killed. Though these devices cannot take and eliminate an entire bed bug infestation, they are great for confirming that there is indeed a pest infestation before you discuss with a local pest control company about scheduling a home pest inspection.

4. DIY tricks.

Homemade detectors and traps are popular among some homeowners as well. You can create your own mattress guards and sticky traps, but these options should only be seen as preventative measures, not as an actual pest control method. A local pest control company should be contacted upon detecting a bed bug infestation to prevent further issues.

5. Canine scent detection.

There are dogs that have been specifically trained to detect bed bugs. This is a much more accurate method in comparison to the human visual home pest inspection method. There is a bit of controversy surrounding this method as recent studies have shown that the level and skill of canine scent detection can vary greatly. Even with this in mind, there have been many successful and effective bed bug pest control canines out there.

All of these bed bug detection methods, though not precisely perfect for each and every case, are still great options and will be recommended by your local pest control company. Before you make any final decisions about pest problems in your home though, get in touch with a bed bug pest control service and make an appointment for a home pest inspection.

Bed bugs are extremely hard to get rid of without professional help. Victims of these nuisances often turn to a local pest control company for inspection and treatment services. For more information on how to deal with bed bugs, log on to www.EdenPest.com.

Why old people suck at driving: They have had a lifetime to learn bad habits

Thursday, February 9, 2012

Why are older drivers, especially those over 70, involved in crashes primarily at intersections? You may tend to attribute this to cognitive or physical decline, such as slower reaction time or poor sight. These factors are undoubtedly part of the problem; however new research by some University of Massachusetts Amherst researchers have come up with another explanation ? older drivers acquire bad habits, and those habits can be unlearned. "The effectiveness of our training program indicates that at least a major part of older drivers' problems can be remediated," says psychologist Alexander Pollatsek, who authored the article with Mathew R. E. Romoser, and Donald L. Fisher after analyzing two earlier studies. "A large percentage of not attending [to the hazards at intersections] is due to some strategy or mindset they've gotten into, rather than some problem with the brain," he continues. "It's a software problem, not a hardware problem." The findings appear in Current Directions in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

In the first study, older drivers (over 70) were compared with younger experienced drivers (25 to 55) who were both navigating an actual vehicle through a simulated world projected on displays outside the vehicle. Drivers approached three different intersections and had to turn. In one, a hill across the main street intersection obscured a possibly approaching car. In the others?turning from a side street onto a main street or vice-versa?trees and curves blocked views of other oncoming cars. The older drivers scanned the danger zone (the region from which a plausible threat could emerge) less often and for significantly shorter times both while approaching and completing the turn ?compromising safety.

Another study tested the effects of a training program. Older drivers, randomly divided into three groups, were videotaped while driving their cars from home to a destination of their choice. That's all one group did. Another, "passive training" group got a 30 to 40 minute lecture about the hazards of intersections and the proper way to scan while turning. The third group watched a video replay of their driving and received feedback (most identified their mistakes before they were pointed out). They then practiced proper scanning and turning on a driving simulator and listened to the same lecture. In a post-test, there was no difference between the first two groups. The third, however, drove as well as younger experienced drivers. Twelve months later, the effects of training had not worn off.

The researchers believe that older drivers, fearful of hitting something ahead of them, develop a habit of extreme caution in driving, but looking mostly straight ahead. This strategy fails at intersections, where collisions usually involve a car coming from the side. "We're not claiming this is a cure-all for every problem," says Pollatsek. But in this situation, with drivers of normal vision and cognitive abilities, "the training has a huge effect."

Pollatsek, 71, is officially an older driver. But he hasn't had an accident since he was 25. "Like most people," he says, "I think I'm a great driver."

Since nursing positions in these countries are lucrative, a lot of people seek chances to migrate. But let us evaluate the top factors nurses consider when searching for a job anywhere in the world.

Salary

Let?s face it one of the primary considerations why anybody in search of employment is the salary or the compensation. Before, the hourly rate of nurses are just average. Actually, they have been one of the lowest paid professionals in the business. But because of the current massive need of nurses all over the world, the rates of nurses have increased dramatically.

Fasting weakens cancer in mice

ScienceDaily (Feb. 8, 2012) ? Man may not live by bread alone, but cancer in animals appears less resilient, according to a study that found chemotherapy drugs work better when combined with cycles of short, severe fasting.

Even fasting on its own effectively treated a majority of cancers tested in animals, including cancers from human cells.

The study in Science Translational Medicine, part of the Science family of journals, found that five out of eight cancer types in mice responded to fasting alone: Just as with chemotherapy, fasting slowed the growth and spread of tumors.

And without exception, "the combination of fasting cycles plus chemotherapy was either more or much more effective than chemo alone," said senior author Valter Longo, professor of gerontology and biological sciences at the University of Southern California.

For example, multiple cycles of fasting combined with chemotherapy cured 20 percent of mice with a highly aggressive type of children's cancer that had spread throughout the organism and 40 percent of mice with a more limited spread of the same cancer.

No mice survived in either case if treated only with chemotherapy.

Only a clinical trial lasting several years can demonstrate whether humans would benefit from the same treatment, Longo cautioned.

Results from the first phase of a clinical trial with breast, urinary tract and ovarian cancer patients, conducted at the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and led by oncologists Tanya Dorff and David Quinn, in collaboration with Longo, have been submitted for presentation at the annual meeting of the American Society of Cancer Oncologists.

The first phase tests only the safety of a therapy, in this case whether patients can tolerate short-term fasts of two days before and one day after chemotherapy.

"We don't know whether in humans it's effective," Longo said of fasting as a cancer therapy. "It should be off limits to patients, but a patient should be able to go to their oncologist and say, 'What about fasting with chemotherapy or without if chemotherapy was not recommended or considered?"

In a case report study with self-reported data published in the journal Aging in 2010, 10 cancer patients who tried fasting cycles perceived fewer side effects from chemotherapy.

Longo stressed that fasting may not be safe for everyone. The clinical trial did not enroll patients who already had lost more than 10 percent of their normal weight or who had other risk factors, such as diabetes. Fasting also can cause a drop in blood pressure and headaches, which could make driving and other activities dangerous for some patients.

In mice, the study found that fasting cycles without chemotherapy could slow the growth of breast cancer, melanoma, glioma and human neuroblastoma. In several cases, the fasting cycles were as effective as chemotherapy.

Fasting also extended survival in mice bearing a human ovarian cancer. In the case of melanoma, the cancer cells became resistant to fasting alone after a single round, but the single cycle of fasting was as effective as chemotherapy in reducing the spread of cancer to other organs.

For all cancers tested, fasting combined with chemotherapy improved survival, slowed tumor growth and/or limited the spread of tumors.

As with any potential cancer treatment, fasting has its limits. The growth of large tumor masses was reduced by multiple fasting and chemotherapy cycles, but cancer-free survival could not be achieved. Longo speculated that cells inside a large tumor may be protected in some way or that the variety of mutations in a large mass may make it more adaptable.

But he noted that in most patients, oncologists have at least one chance to attack the cancer before it grows too large.

Longo and collaborators at the National Institute on Aging studied one type of breast cancer in detail to try to understand the effects of fasting.

While normal cells deprived of nutrients enter a dormant state similar to hibernation, the researchers saw that the cancer cells tried to make new proteins and took other steps to keep growing and dividing.

The result, Longo said, was a "cascade of events" that led to the creation of damaging free radical molecules, which broke down the cancer cells' own DNA and caused their destruction.

"The cell is, in fact, committing cellular suicide. What we're seeing is that the cancer cell tries to compensate for the lack of all these things missing in the blood after fasting. It may be trying to replace them, but it can't," Longo said.

The new study bookends research published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2008.

In that study, Longo's team showed that fasting protected normal cells against chemotherapy, but did not address the effect on cancer cells. The study also focused only on a single cancer and chemotherapy drug.

The new study on a range of cancers and common chemotherapy drugs extends the 2008 results by showing that fasting not only fails to protect cancer cells, but makes them more vulnerable.

Longo called the effect "Differential Stress Sensitization" to reflect the change in vulnerability between normal and cancerous cells.

Longo's interest in fasting and cancer grew from years of studies on the beneficial effects of fasting in yeast and other organisms. He showed 15 years ago that starved yeast cells enter a stress-resistant mode as they wait for better times.

By contrast, he said, the mutations in cancer cells come at a cost, such as a loss in adaptability to diverse environments. For example, Longo found that yeast genetically modified to resemble cancer cells become much more sensitive to several toxins.

"A way to beat cancer cells may not be to try to find drugs that kill them specifically but to confuse them by generating extreme environments, such as fasting that only normal cells can quickly respond to," Longo said.

Longo's collaborators were lead authors Changhan Lee, a graduate student in Longo's laboratory at the USC Davis School of Gerontology, and Lizzia Raffaghello, a researcher at the Giannina Gaslini Institute of Genoa, Italy. Other co-authors were Min Wei, research assistant professor in gerontology at USC; Sebastian Brandhorst, Fernando Safdie, Saewon Hwang and Annalisa Merlino, researchers in the Longo lab; Giovanna Bianchi, Laura Emionite and Vito Pistoia of the Giannina Gaslini Institute; and Alejandro Martin-Montalvo and Rafael de Cabo of the National Institute on Aging.

Funding for the study came from the National Institutes of Health, the Bakewell Foundation, The V Foundation for Cancer Research, the Norris cancer center, the Italian Association for Cancer Research and the Italian Foundation for Cancer Research.
