Non-profits and Social Media: Fundraising Campaigns Where ...
Fundraising is one of the necessary evils of the non-profit world.
In order to keep a non-profit afloat, and do the good works that you originally set out to do, you have to be funded. That requires some mix of seeking grants from the government and businesses, as well as approaching individuals to ?invest? in the work you are doing. And quite often, in this economy, it might seem as though you spend more time trying to raise funds, than you do on your actual social mission.
In his wonderful new book, The Non-Profit Narrative (which I?ll be reviewing very soon), Dan Portnoy notes:
Non-profit organizations weren?t started to consistently ask for money and talk about the troubles of keeping the lights on. Remember, they were started to change the world.
And yet, if you work at a non-profit organization, you may feel like you always have your hand out. And that might actually be the perception that many have of your organization. But what if you just took the time to maximize your fundraising efforts, so that you could generate more money with each ask, and therefore, not have to ask so often? Wouldn?t that be a wonderful thing? It?s no fun asking for money.
Unless you?re creative. And have the right tools at your disposal.
Enter Razoo Giving, an online social giving platform. My friend Ifdy Perez, a champion of social good, and the Community Manager at Razoo, which I believe is the most robust social giving platform[, sent me a DM on Twitter yesterday telling me about their new project: Twive and Receive. When I checked it out, I knew I not only had to write this post about it, but I also signed up. But more on that later?
Twive and Receive is a 24-hour online giving competition scheduled for June 14th. Folks like you and me will represent our communities on Twitter and other social platforms to raise money for our favorite local non-profit, while at the same time competing to help them win a share of $30,000.
Razoo has hosted one-day events like this before, but usually on a more hyper-local or regional level. For instance, ?Give to the Max Day? back in November in Washington, D.C. raised more than $2-million in just one day for over a thousand local non-profits. Pretty impressive, eh?
Here?s what I like about this particular campaign:
1) It?s social ? At the heart of this campaign is Twitter, but other platforms like Facebook, Pinterest, and even blogging will be used to raise awareness during this 24-hour period. While one or two people in each community will be heading up the effort, they?ll be using their online social influence to get others on board.
2) It fosters community ? The large majority of the campaign will be done online, but there can be offline elements as well. And you and other locals can band together online, and even gather together offline, to rally the troops and raise awareness and funds for your cause. Nothing brings people together better than a shared cause that benefits your local community.
3) It?s short ? Many high profile fundraisers seem to go on forever. And ever. This is limited to 24-hours. In. Out. It?s Over.
4) It?s competitive ? Gamification is one of the buzzwords of the social realm these days. Foursquare and other platforms use gamification to get people involved and keep them involved. Who doesn?t love a little friendly competition? It?s you and your city against a host of other cities, seeing who can raise the most money. Community pride can be a powerful motivating factor.
5) It?s fun ? Or, it CAN be fun. It?s all how you execute. But when?s the last time you enjoyed fundraising? Usually we dread the task of asking others for money. Here, you can have some fun and raise money at the same time.
6) It fosters and rewards creativity ? I have no idea how this campaign will shake out, but I?m convinced of one thing: the cities that win will be the ones that exhibit the most creativity. If all you do is tweet about raising money, you can only go so far. But what if you get local businesses and media involved? Are there offline methods you can use to get people involved online? What about a tweetup for happy hour? There are so many things
7) It fosters relationships between the community and the non-profit ? If you do this right, your non-profit will be on board, and they?ll be promoting it as well. You?ll have the chance to connect local folks to the non-profit, who might never have engaged with them in the past. And it feels good to give something back to your community as an individual. At the same time, the non-profit benefits by rolling up their sleeves and working alongside community members.
8) Razoo will help you along the way ? This isn?t some promotion or contest where you?re told to do something, and then the organizing business disappears until the last day. Razoo will be putting together an online toolkit to help you plan your day, including widgets you can put on websites and Facebook pages. They?ll also be hosting weekly conference calls to bring you up to date on the campaign, and offer you tips.
9) Everyone wins ? You win by being a part of something good in your community, and you?ll get to meet and build relationships with others. Your non-profit wins, because even if they don?t ?win? the competition, they still get to keep the money that was raised for them. Plus they?ll most likely have access to new donors. And Razoo wins because they are the organizers of this, and many non-profits will be introduced to their great platform.
I?ve already signed up to be the point person for my community in Lancaster, and I?ve chosen the non-profit for which we?ll be fundraising: Water Street Ministries (client) which provides a variety of services to the homeless and needy in our area. They serve a lot of people and do great work.

School punishes Filipino boys for Facebook kissing
MANILA, Philippines (AP) ? A Philippine Catholic school is withholding the diplomas of six high school boys who uploaded Facebook photos that appear to show them kissing one another, an education official said Friday.
A day earlier, a Philippine court rejected another Catholic school's decision to bar five girls from graduation ceremonies because they had posed in bikinis for photos posted on Facebook. The cases test the limits of privacy in a conservative Catholic nation that is also among the world's most prolific users of social networking sites.
Department of Education officer Samuel Mergenio said the six boys told him they had taken prank photos to make it appear that their lips touched. One of the boys uploaded the pictures on Facebook and mistakenly made them available to others, Mergenio said.
The pictures were not taken at the boys' school, Infant Jesus Academy in the Manila suburb of Marikina, but the students were wearing school uniforms, he said.
Mergenio said the school's chancellor informed the department late Thursday that the boys will be allowed to participate in the graduation ceremonies but "the release of their diplomas will be delayed." He said the school did not say when the diplomas will be handed over and that he was awaiting a formal written report from the school.
The school chancellor was not available for comment Friday.
The mother of the boy who uploaded the photos said she works as a nurse in Saudi Arabia and went home only to attend the graduation of her son, one of twins.
She said she refused to attend the graduation ceremonies because her son would only be subjected to ridicule since he won't be called to the stage to receive his diploma. "It will be like an insult," she told The Associated Press.
On Thursday, a judge in central Cebu city issued a restraining order against St. Theresa's College High School, ordering it to allow the five students who appeared in the bikini photos to take part in Friday afternoon's graduation ceremonies.
The school, which declined to comment to the AP, asked the court to reconsider. The girls' lawyer, Cornelio Mercado, said Friday that the school was still insisting on banning the students while its motion for reconsideration is pending.
Mercado said one Facebook photo at issue showed a girl holding a cigarette and a liquor bottle, while others showed all five wearing bikinis at a beach party on the 16th birthday of one the girls in late December.
The mother of the girl who hosted the party said a security guard barred the group Friday from entering the school campus.
"They were really hurt," she said.
School officials took action against the girls for what they called "engaging in immoral, indecent, obscene or lewd acts," according to court records. They said the students would graduate but could not participate in activities or ceremonies.
Earlier this month, the five girls were summoned by the principal and other school officials, "dressed down" and called "sluts," Mercado said.
The judge, Wilfredo Navarro of the Regional Trial Court, castigated school officials for calling the girls "inappropriate names." He said not allowing them to participate in graduation activities "would indeed be most un-Christian if not entirely inhuman."

Simply Bike ? multilingual parenting: paula {spanish, english, catalan}

The languages your family uses: Spanish, English, Catalan
What motivated you to raise your child(ren) bilingually:
I grew up in a French school in Catalonia, Spain, where even the dumbest kids were able to manage three languages. When I was 3, I was left in a classroom with a teacher that would only speak French to me ?or so I?m told, because I have no memory of ever not knowing French. I absorbed it like a sponge, without noticing. I have never lived in a French speaking country and I never spoke it at home and yet it?s almost a mother language to me. Multilingualism has always been part of my life in a very natural way. If we lived in Spain, I would make sure that my children learn something besides Spanish and Catalan. Living in the US, however, I also feel that not speaking to my children in Spanish would be like stealing something from them. Spanish and Catalan are part of their heritage.
How does the bilingualism work in your family (i.e., who speaks what language? When do you switch? How do you decide on what language to use and when?)
Each parent speaks his/her mother language to the children: Spanish for me, Catalan for dad. That also applies to the relatives of each one. The children can clearly tell which language belongs in each situation. Their dad and I speak Catalan to each other, so if address him, I?ll speak Catalan. But if I then turn to the children in the next sentence, I?ll continue in Spanish. The children also switch languages when addressing mom or dad. This may sound really hard and awkward, but it is truly the way communication in a group happens in Catalonia. Everyone is bilingual, so nobody gets lost.
English enters the scene when someone who doesn?t understand Spanish/Catalan is present.
What are some of the challenges you?ve encountered?
Sooner or later, English becomes their strongest language, and then they will try to use it with you. It?s just easier for them, and they often do it without even realizing. It is crucial to be very, very stubborn, and ask them to switch back to the other language ?every time. If I give up, I know the day will come, 10 or 20 years from now, when they?ll complain to me ?Why didn?t you force me to speak Spanish?!?? Also, one day your sweet baby will be a cranky teenager, and I want to keep the advantage of being able to argue in my native tongue ?
Finding formal education of Spanish has been really hard. Several years ago, I tried to organize a class for Chiara, who was then in first grade. Ames has a good number of children who speak Spanish at home and are thus relatively fluent, and I expected that gathering a group for a once-a-week class would be an easy task. Sadly, I encountered a cold response. All my attempts to circulate some information through the school system were blocked by the district or school administrations. I had a perplexing conversation with someone who teaches Spanish as a second language, who tried to convince me that teaching my children Spanish would prevent them from learning proper English. Out of the few parents I was able to contact, only a handful were interested and unfortunately we have never been able to find a suitable schedule for all. As for the rest, I can only sadly suspect that they bought into the impossibility of bilingualism and see Spanish as an obstacle for their children.
So we?ve settled for tutors. Chiara and Jacob?s grammar and vocabulary has improved a lot, and they are learning to read and write properly in Spanish. It?s worth every penny. They regularly complain because they have to stay home and study (one hour a week!), and individual classes can be dull, so we?ve had several conversations where I try to explain to them everything I?m telling you, and why this is so important, and they understand. I know we?ll have to talk it over many times again, but that?s what education is all about.
What have been some of the rewards of raising a bilingual child?
Along with language come culture and a different way of seeing the world. If our children did not speak Spanish and Catalan, they would not be able to connect to their roots and communicate with their relatives, and there would be many things I would not be able to share with them. Of course, because my language is Spanish, I also enjoy knowing that I?m allowing them to communicate with roughly half a billion people in the world. That?s not a small number.
What role does your extended family play in your decision and ability to raise a bilingual child?
Every time a relative comes here and every trip to Europe are intensive language courses for our children. Their Spanish or Catalan flourishes instantaneously. Being able to communicate with their beloved cousins, grandparents, etc., is a great incentive for them.
What resources have you found useful?
Local resources are scarce. Over the years, I have brought books and DVDs with me from Spain, and relatives help with more of them as gifts. The public library has little to offer and most of it is geared toward Spanish as a second language or toward Spanish-speaking adults. Children books in Spanish available in the US are often very poor translations into an artificial when not incorrect Spanish.
What are some of your long-term goals?
I would like my children to master Spanish by the time they leave high school. I hope they?ll be able to write correctly and to read serious literature (I don?t need them to feel comfortable with Cervantes, but I hope they will be able to enjoy Garc?a M?rquez, just like I struggle with Shakespeare but enjoy every word of Steinbeck). If they chose to do so, they would be perfectly ready to live and work in a Spanish-speaking country.
What advice would you give a new parent starting the process?
Be stubborn. Remember that, down the road, your child will be infinitely grateful for your efforts: you?re making them a gift. Set a high bar for your hopes: children can learn languages very easily if the environment forces them to.

Louisville in Final 4 with 72-68 win over Florida
PHOENIX (AP) ? Rick Pitino nudged out Billy Donovan for a spot in the Final Four on Saturday when his Louisville team finished the game on a 23-8 run for a 72-68 victory over Florida in the West Regional.
Chane Behanan hit the go-ahead basket with 1:04 left for fourth-seeded Louisville, then after two Cardinals free throws, Florida's Bradley Beal and Erving Walker each missed chances to tie.
The seventh-seeded Gators (26-11) fell in the regional semifinals for the second straight year, while Louisville (30-9) will go to the Final Four for the ninth time, and the second under Pitino.
Russ Smith led Louisville with 19 points and Behanan had 17. The Cardinals played the final 3:58 without point guard Peyton Siva, who fouled out.
The Gators shot 8 for 11 from 3-point range in the first half but didn't make one in the second.

I seem to be angrier or more upset or just driven to blog this week than any other week. But this one has been a long time coming, and it was finally propelled onto the page because someone tweeted my wife Stella, saying she is privileged to do what she does. She?s out there, in the public eye, speaking on behalf of those who cannot speak out, or are not given the chance to speak out and the person said she should do more of this, spend more of her time speaking out, for them. But she?s a writer, and she has to write in order to be where she is, and try and make a difference.
ANYWAY
She really isn?t privileged. Neither am I. I can only speak for me, so for those of you who think me (and she) might be privileged, here?s a brief history of me!
Left my secondary modern with three o-levels. First job ever, age 17 at Her Majesty?s Theatre as a dresser. I was earning the grand sum of @ ?34 a week, plus tips! I LOVED MY JOB. I got it by sheer determination, I made the phone calls, wrote the letters (yeah, we had to do it the old-fashioned way, and it took time and patience, the latter of which I have very little of these days, technology has made me impatient). I did that work for some time, went to drama school, worked during all my holidays as a dresser and later as a receptionist at the Pineapple Dance Studios, and as a motor cycle messenger, (albeit for one day), and in my local chemist and then I thought PR looked like fun, so managed to secure a job with a technical PR company (I know what ball valves and actuators are, do you?). Then I worked for Townsend Thoresen (I was there when the Zeebrugge ferry disaster happened), then I worked for a woman?s magazine (where I had some short stories published ? and rejected), worked my way from secretary to assistant fiction editor, left (actually was forced to leave), returned a year later to be fiction editor of another title (YES!). Did this for ages, worked in casting, as a casting assistant, which I had actually done before (in a small office in Soho with Beth Charkham, while her sister Esta was casting something big).
Applied for an English degree at Birkbeck, did that for four years (all paid for by me!) while working full-time. On to an MA in Creative writing, applied and received an award for my fees and maintenance, though I was still working full-time. By now I was in my late 30s. I started writing, but worked full-time, and gradually gave up the full-time work to write. And I have been freelance for about 15 years.
The word freelance makes some people think you don?t actually have a job, while others think, ooh, you?re so lucky, you can do what you want when you want, you can choose to get up late and go away when you want, you can watch day time TV (I never have) you don?t have to shop with everyone else at the weekend, when the supermarkets are packed with tired people with proper jobs. You can welcome the washing machine, dishwasher (we?ve only had one for 3 1/2 years, we?re not that posh) central heating repairman whenever it suits you. Yes, granted we freelancers can do all of this, and we do. But we don?t get sick pay or holiday pay or compassionate leave, or a guaranteed wage or a pension (my total pension will I think last 6 months). And if we wait for the washing machine, dishwasher, central heating repairman to turn up when he says he will, and mostly they don?t, we still have to do the work, we still have to create and finish our work in order to hope to be paid. And can I just add that often the pay comes months later.
I work whenever I can. I had intended to work on a play when I returned from university today, but I had some family business to attend to and then decided to write this blog!
I like continuity, I like to wake up, have two cups of tea, some breakfast, check my mail, tweet and Facebook and then work. All of that is a warm up for me. I prefer to have everything clear before I write and I like peace and quiet. So when we had major building work next door (six months on one side and three on the other), it was at times impossible to think, let alone write. But we did. Because we had to.
For the past two years I have been in the fortunate position of having a guaranteed income, not a great amount, but it has made an enormous difference to my otherwise financially unstable working life. I have a job at a university two days a week, and I love it. At the end of May, this job stops, and then I?m back to my financially unstable working life. Right now, apart from this lovely job, I am waiting to hear about six projects all in some stage of development, a mix of theatre, radio and TV and all with no money yet. I am also working on a new play, written on spec ? that means with no advance, commission, with no money yet. Many of us do this all the time. It?s just the way this profession is for some of us. Some of you may ask why, why would you work for no money? Because the possibility of making some proper money is always there, and things could change for me over night. And mostly, I love what I do. And I?d rather do the thing I love which has the possibility of making it big, than settle for less with no change to my working life or finances. I wouldn?t change it for anything.
And yes, there are writers who get huge advances and rolling commissions, but they still work hard and they had to start somewhere. So next time you have a paid day off to welcome the washing machine, dishwasher, central heating repairman, think of me, who is not getting paid to welcome any of these workers into my house, who does not have a technical department to sort out my computer as soon as I ask for help and not have to pay for it, who has to fit in other work around my actual work, teaching and talks and talking to new writers who want advice and events which we all have to go to, it?s just part of our job. And sometimes the events are glorious and sometimes they are dull, but it is part of what we do, and making an effort counts.
I know everyone thinks we have a glamorous life, (right now I am sitting in my claret dressing gown and pyjamas) and occasionally we do, we meet inspiring people and go to wonderful events. Most writers, book writers particularly, have to go to great lengths to promote their work, which include library talks, readings and interviews and sometimes TV and radio appearances, occasionally at very late notice, (sometimes for little money, sometimes for no money, hey it?s publicity, you want them to be paid as well?).
And then there are the meetings, ones which take up a whole morning or a whole afternoon or a whole day, which put an end to any real work, because when you return home you think about the meeting, and write up those great ideas you talked about, and answer 101 e-mails. Often those meetings could be taken on the phone or Skype, but the people with proper jobs like to go out and have a coffee or a glass of wine, it?s time away from their work, why wouldn?t they? Do you know how many meetings I?ve been to which have taken up so much time and amounted to nothing?
And then there?s the back ache from sitting, and not complaining (well, maybe a little) and booking expensive time with the osteopath to help your back ache so you can sit at your desk and work and get another back ache, and so it goes on. Do you know how many times people assume I can just sit down and write and keep writing, I can switch it on? I am not a light bulb. I have flashes of inspiration, but ideas have to be developed and worked on, and that takes times, and if you?ve stuck with this blog, you will see that writers often do not have time to do the thing that makes them money, the thing that will make them money. Those writers who are in the public eye, got there because of their work, and some of them do good in the world, but they have to keep working to keep their profile so they can keep making a difference. If they stopped working, the public would forget about them and that would be it! There are those who do take time to make change in the world, but we cannot do it 24/7. We have to work, it feeds us and it feeds you.
Talking of which, I might just get an hour of writing in before dinner and TV! Then again, I have just written over 1600 words. Mushroom soup tonight. Ah, privileged me.

Major Yahoo shareholder launches board challenge
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? A major Yahoo shareholder has launched a campaign to win four seats on the Internet company's board, setting the stage for a nasty battle that could drag on for months.
Hedge fund Third Point LLC, which owns a 5.8 percent stake in Yahoo Inc., thinks the struggling company would do better if Third Point representatives were in the boardroom helping recently hired CEO Scott Thompson overhaul the operations. Thompson joined Yahoo's board in January after the company lured him away from eBay Inc.'s PayPal to become its CEO.
Third Point formally began its attempt to shake up Yahoo's board with a Wednesday regulatory filing that comes more than a month after the hedge fund announced it would revolt unless the company accepted its slate of candidates as directors. In a letter last week, Third Point CEO Daniel Loeb gave Thompson a final chance to avert a mutiny by allowing the hedge fund's candidates to join the company's board.
Yahoo now must grapple with a shareholder mutiny that will add to the turmoil surrounding the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company, as Thompson mulls a dramatic reorganization that could bring a large number layoffs.
This marks the second time in four years that Yahoo has faced a boardroom challenge from a disgruntled shareholder. In 2008, billionaire Carl Icahn sought to overthrow Yahoo's board after the company balked at a chance to sell itself to Microsoft Corp. for $47.5 billion, or $33 per share. Icahn wound up accepting a truce that gave him and two of his hand-picked choices seats on Yahoo's board. Icahn and his allies are no longer on the board.
Third Point, based in New York, wants to use the botched Microsoft negotiations as an example of why Yahoo's board needs more expertise. The hedge fund opposes a Yahoo request to maintain a court seal on certain documents contained in a lawsuit filed by shareholders upset about how the Microsoft talks were handled. The Delaware Chancery Court case has already been settled, but Third Point still wants the opportunity to review some of the evidence that so far has been kept under wraps.
Third Point's proposed directors are Daniel Loeb, the hedge fund's manager; former NBC Universal CEO Jeff Zucker; former MTV Networks executive Michael Wolf and turnaround specialist Harry Wilson. In its filing, Third Point estimated it will spend about $8 million trying to get its nominees elected. The hedge fund already has invested about $1 billion during the past seven months to acquire its Yahoo holdings.
Yahoo's 11-member board already has changed. Four directors, including Chairman Roy Bostock, plan to step down at the company's annual meeting this year. The company appointed two directors, Alfred Amoroso and Maynard Webb, to its board last month and says it is still evaluating other candidates..
Unless a compromise is reached, the showdown between Yahoo and Third Point will be settled at the company's annual meeting. A date for the meeting hasn't been set yet, although Yahoo usually holds it in late June. When Icahn mounted his 2008 challenge, Yahoo postponed the meeting until August.
The upcoming departures from Yahoo's board are part of an attempt to placate shareholders frustrated with a long-running financial funk that has depressed the company's share price.
Yahoo shares rose 10 cents Wednesday to close at $15.51. The stock hasn't traded above $20 in the past 3 ? years.

No matter what time of year it is, having even small leaks in your windows or doors is like letting money, literally, float away. Just an 1/8-inch crack all the way around a doorway creates the same air loss as a 6-inch square hole in the middle of your door, according to the Edison Electric Institute.
There are various ways to check for window and door leaks, from holding a candle flame near the crack and gauging how much the flame moves to sliding a piece of paper through the opening to see if it catches or tears. If you find a leak, the easiest solution is to add weather-stripping around doors and to caulk windows. Remember to check once a year to see if any repairs or replacements are needed.
Tip 3: Swap the bulbs
You?ve likely heard plenty about switching to more energy efficient light bulbs, but maybe you?re not sure if it really makes a difference. Consider this: homes that use Energy Star-qualified light bulbs use about 75 percent less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and they last at least six times longer.
Additionally, an incandescent lamp is really more of a heater than a light, with nearly 90 percent of the input energy being converted and lost in waste heat rather than light, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. All those little heaters warm up your home fast and you have to turn on fans and your air conditioner to regulate the temperature. Switch your light bulbs and the savings will follow.
Keeping energy bills low is a challenge, but with the right strategies you can reduce your bill and help the environment, a win-win for everyone.
