'Jesus,' 'ninja,' among worst passwords of 2012

3 hrs.

The next time you're asked to create?an 8-character password, don't choose "password." Despite it being the among worst possible choices, it remains the most common password?used on the Internet and posted by hackers.

No. 2 and No. 3, respectively are the tried-and-true weaklings?"123456" and "12345678." (Those two mean you can count???on being low-hanging fruit for hackers, that is.)

The info?comes from?SplashData, which makes password management applications. The company's?top 25 list of the "scariest" passwords was released with?Halloween as a peg, but there's no treats here for anyone, and possibly some nasty tricks.

The list was put together "from?files containing millions of stolen passwords posted online by hackers," SplashData says. If you use any of the passwords on the list, you should change them immediately. Otherwise, users "of any of these passwords are most likely to be victims in future breaches," the company says.

While "password," "123456" and "12345678" remain the top three again from last year's list, newcomers include?"welcome, " "jesus," "ninja," "mustang" and the brilliant?"password1."?

Here's the top 25 "Worst Passwords of 2012," including their current ranking and any change from the 2011 list:?

1. ?password (Unchanged)
2, ?123456 (Unchanged)
3. ?12345678 (Unchanged)
4. ?abc123 (up 1)
5. ?qwerty (down 1)
6. ?monkey (unchanged)
7. ?letmein (up 1)
8. ?dragon (up 2)
9. ?111111 (up 3)
10. baseball (up 1)
11. iloveyou (up 2)
12. trustno1 (down 3)
13. 1234567 (down 6)
14. sunshine (up 1)
15. master (down 1)
16. 123123 (up 4)
17. welcome (new)?
18. shadow (up 1)

21. jesus (new)
22. michael (up 2)
23. ninja ?(new)
24. mustang (new)
25. password1 (new)

"At this time of year, people enjoy focusing on scary costumes, movies and decorations, but those who have been through it can tell you how terrifying it is to have your identity stolen because of a hacked password,? said Morgan Slain, SplashData CEO, in a statement.?

?Even though each year hacking tools get more sophisticated, thieves still tend to prefer easy targets,? he said. ?Just a little bit more effort in choosing better passwords will go a long way toward making you safer online.?

Tools that Make It Easier to Manage ADHD | World of Psychology

Tools that Make It Easier to Manage ADHD When you have ADHD, you might get frustrated that you don?t work like everyone else. Maybe you can?t sit still for hours and listen to a lecture. Maybe you don?t learn as well from reading a book. Maybe you have trouble committing your ideas to paper.

Unfortunately, people with ADHD are usually given limited tools, such as a pen and paper, and discouraged from moving around, said David Giwerc, MCC, founder and president of the ADD Coach Academy.

But this doesn?t work for your uniquely wired brain. And that?s OK. People with ADHD don?t need to fit themselves into some box. You don?t need to work like other people. You can find tools that fit your learning style and needs ? and help you succeed.

Below, Giwerc and other ADHD experts list their favorite tools ? everything from phone apps to computer software.

Google Calendar. Sure, it?s simple, but that?s the upside about this electronic calendar. ?By following the schedule you can ensure you are reducing prioritizing dilemmas, time management issues and motivation hiccups. Just follow the plan,? said Andrew Pebley, M.A., a coach and consultant specializing in working professionals and executives with ADHD.

Giwerc also uses Google Calendar, and takes advantage of the color options. His activities appear in one color, while his key employees are in another color.

Alarm apps. Because people with ADHD tend to hyperfocus on certain tasks, they can have a tough time sticking to a schedule. If you need to work on other tasks, use an alarm to break the flow, Pebley said. There are countless alarms to choose from. Pebley?s favorite is Alarmdroid, which has many additional features, he said.

MindManager. This software program lets you create mind maps and diagrams with keywords. Giwerc, who?s a visual learner, uses the program to brainstorm ideas and organize his thoughts. He?s used it for everything from outlining articles to presentations to his book Permission to Proceed: The Keys to Creating a Life of Passion, Purpose and Possibility for Adults with ADHD.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking. Giwerc also uses this voice-activated software, particularly when he?s bombarded with ideas. Sometimes he?ll look at his mind map, and discuss those ideas. As he?s speaking, the program transcribes his words into Microsoft Word. (Giwerc noted that the best versions are 10 and above.)

Don?t Forget the Milk. ?This is a task management app [that] assists?by presenting reminders for the tasks you have stored,? Pebley said. He knows many individuals who love it.

Exercise ball. Stephanie Sarkis, Ph.D, NCC, a psychotherapist and author, likes to sit on an exercise ball while working at her desk. ?Being able to move around ? while still staying seated ? helps with focusing,? she said.

Cordless headset. For Giwerc having a cordless headset is key when he needs to concentrate. (He uses a Jabra headset.) Sometimes when he?s talking to clients, he?ll either walk around his office or on the treadmill.

Errands. This is another app that helps you ?set categories and priorities for?tasks,? Sarkis said. She also noted that tasks are organized by due date, and you can even set alarms for separate tasks.

Excel. Giwerc uses Excel spreadsheets to keep track of quotes for his presentations and writing. He categorizes his hundreds of quotes by themes.

Copytalk Mobile Scribe. Some of Giwerc?s clients use this transcription service. They simply call in, dictate information, and then receive it in email form, he said.

Attention Talk Radio. Reading can be a slower process for people with ADHD. Giwerc, who?s also an auditory learner, likes to listen to these free 30-minute interviews with renowned ADHD experts. He suggested accessing upcoming interviews on this page, archived interviews on this page or using iTunes.

Animoto. Giwerc uses this program to create informative and engaging videos about complex topics. Here?s a video he created about ADHD research. (As a visual learner, he also likes to watch TED talks.)

You might think you?re a terrible writer, worker or student. But it?s likely that you just don?t have the right tools. Experiment with various programs and apps, and find what works for you. Try out free tutorials, Giwerc said. And then invest in tools that you know are successful for your specific needs.

Facebook earnings: Quarterly loss but mobile ad improvement

Loss pinned on employee stock payouts, shifting market trends

Facebook has announced an increase of 32 percent in third-quarter revenue to $1.26 billion, but still posted a loss of $59 million. Advertising revenue increased 36 percent from the same quarter last year to $1.09 billion. Revenue from payments and other businesses increased 13 percent to $176 million. Mobile revenue compromised 14 percent of total advertising sales, which came in above most analysts' expectations.

"By the evidence of one quarter, they are obviously showing some progress," said Colin Sebastian, an analyst at Robert W. Baird. "But we still don't know which ad formats work and how much will advertisers will pay, that's something we'll have to track over time."

Third-quarter mobile revenue surged from the second quarter, when Facebook said that it was generating more than $1 million a day from the new mobile ads, that appear in users' news feeds. Facebook claimed that roughly fifty percent of that revenue was from the mobile division, suggesting that mobile advertising revenue totaled $45 million in the second quarter.
Facebook said it crossed the one billion monthly active use threshold on September 30, of which 604 million were mobile users, a gain of 61 percent from a year earlier.

"Advertising revenue from mobile was the number that really stood out," said Sterne, Agee & Leach analyst Arvind Bhatia. "They are saying mobile ad revenue was 14 percent of total ad revenue. That would be about $140 million and I was expecting $40 or $50 million from this."

"They beat on the top line. They are talking about 60 percent of users on mobile. They are monetizing this OK," said Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter. "Fourteen percent of total ad revenue is not chump change and some people were talking like it was zero. It's not bad monetization and a lot better than expected."

'Unfinished Swan' is a beautiful shooting game without the bullets

3 hrs.

"The Unfinished Swan" is one of those video?games that I feel compelled to show people who think they know what video games are all about: Guns. And more guns. And the bullets that come out of those guns.

Yes, some video games are all about the guns. And that's just fine if you're a grown-up who loves shooting digital?things (which many of us do). But while "The?Unfinished?Swan" is a shooting game of a sort, it's also a fine?example of the other end of the gaming spectrum???the place where game?developers (often of the independent variety)?create something that is entirely unexpected.

"The?Unfinished Swan," developed?by the small?indie team at Giant Sparrow, is at turns an interactive story book,?an ever-changing puzzle?and?a work of art.?It is a first-person shooting game minus the bullets. Most importantly, it is an?example of how video games and art can come together to make something that is enormously?fun,?thought-provoking and?wondrous?to behold all at the same time.?

In this downloadable game just launched on?the PlayStation 3, you play a young orphan?boy named Monroe who has?chased after a swan???chased after it right into a strange other-world. Inside this world?you find yourself venturing through a surreal?kingdom that is at turns?serene?and terrifying ... and always surprising.?(Check out the just-released launch trailer for a peek at the game.)

There is a?mysterious king (voiced by?none other?than Terry Gilliam himself) and an elusive bird that is always out of reach, and playing through this story book brings to mind both "Alice in Wonderland"?and M.C. Escher. Indeed, it often feels a bit like you're playing an M.C. Escher lithograph.?

The basics of the gameplay are made clear in the first chapter. Playing from the first-person?perspective?you must walk around and?shoot things. If you've played first-person shooting games before, then?you know how this goes ... and yet?you don't.

Here you enter a world that is entirely?white and you must shoot,?not bullets, but?balls of black paint which reveal the shape of the environment?around you. The splatterings of the?black paint reveal the place where a wall curves, where a bench stands, and?where a dock leads out into the water. Basically, you are blind without the paint. The below?teaser trailer for the game will show you what I mean...

But this is only the beginning.?As you play, you will go on to shoot balls of water and you will paint with living greenery. And without revealing too much, let's just say?this shooting and painting mechanic changes chapter by chapter in some very interesting ways. And just when you think you know what "The Unfinished Swan" is all about, it takes a turn ...?and then another turn.

And that's the beautiful thing about this game???the joy of discovery. Because "The Unfinished Swan" is unlike other games and because the developers at Giant Sparrow don't hand-hold you with?specific instructions, you are?treated to these wonderful "a-ha!" moments throughout the game.

Though "The Unfinished Swan" is not a child's game, per se, it's well worth playing with a kid if you happen to have one on hand. Young minds are especially good at appreciating the joys of?exploration and discovery. I played with my own young gamer and it was a thrill?to watch his delight at each revelation this game held.

At $15, "The Unfinished Swan" could stand to be, perhaps a bit longer. And?experienced?gamers?will no doubt say it could also?stand to be more challenging. But that said, "The Unfinished Swan" feels like an antidote to mainstream?gaming as usual, and that is well worth the price of admission.

If you love games like "Journey,"?"Flower"?and "Limbo"?then this definitely belongs in your collection. And even if you prefer your first-person shooters to come with?bullets, "The Unfinished Swan" is worth checking out just to see how creative game developers can take what we know ... and make something entirely unexpected.

Winda Benedetti?writes?about video?games for NBC?News. You can follow her tweets about games and other things?on Twitter?here?@WindaBenedetti?and you can?follow her?on?Google+.?Meanwhile, be sure to check?out the?IN-GAME?FACEBOOK PAGE?to discuss the day's?gaming news and reviews.

Living power cables discovered: Multicellular bacteria transmit electrons across relatively great distances

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? A multinational research team has discovered filamentous bacteria that function as living power cables in order to transmit electrons thousands of cell lengths away.

The Desulfobulbus bacterial cells, which are only a few thousandths of a millimeter long each, are so tiny that they are invisible to the naked eye. And yet, under the right circumstances, they form a multicellular filament that can transmit electrons across a distance as large as 1 centimeter as part of the filament's respiration and ingestion processes.

The discovery by scientists at Aarhus University in Denmark and USC will be published in Nature on October 24.

"To move electrons over these enormous distances in an entirely biological system would have been thought impossible," said Moh El-Naggar, assistant professor of physics at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, and co-author of the Nature paper.

Aarhus scientists had discovered a seemingly inexplicable electric current on the sea floor years ago. The new experiments revealed that these currents are mediated by a hitherto unknown type of long, multicellular bacteria that act as living power cables

"Until we found the cables we imagined something cooperative where electrons were transported through external networks between different bacteria. It was indeed a surprise to realize, that it was all going on inside a single organism," said Lars Peter Nielsen of the Aarhus Department of Bioscience, and a corresponding author of the Nature paper.

The team studied bacteria living in marine sediments that power themselves by oxidizing hydrogen sulfide. Cells at the bottom live in a zone that is poor in oxygen but rich in hydrogen sulfide, and those at the top live in an area rich in oxygen but poor in hydrogen sulfide.

The solution? They form long chains that transport individual electrons from the bottom to the top, completing the chemical reaction and generating life-sustaining energy.

"You have feeder cells on one end and breather cells on the other, allowing the whole living cable to survive," El-Naggar said.

Aarhus and USC researchers collaborated to use physical techniques to evaluate the long-distance electron transfer in the filamentous bacteria. El-Naggar and his colleagues had previously used scanning-probe microscopy and nanofabrication methods to describe how bacteria use nanoscale structures called "bacterial nanowires" to transmit electrons many body lengths away from cells.

"I'm a physicist, so when I look at remarkable phenomena like this, I like to put it into a quantifiable process," El-Naggar said.

El-Naggar, who was just chosen as one of the Popular Science Brilliant 10 young scientists for his work in biological physics, said physicists are increasingly being tapped to tackle tough biological questions.

"This world is so fertile right now," he said. "It's just exploding."

Reading is not just looking at words and saying them aloud in our minds, it?s letting those words take us away to visit new destinations, learn about new things, engage our imaginations. And for many of us, a good book becomes like a friend?all we have to do is pick it up, start turning pages, and we feel comfortable, interested, and sometimes, even loved.

Many studies have proven the positive correlation between a child's development and family reading time. But the bottom line is that when we read together with our kids, it creates a connection and a common interest. When children are younger it creates a sense of safety, nurturing, and love. ?It also helps establish routines, particularly in the evening before bedtime, because if we read to our kids consistently at that time, it helps transition them from a busy, hectic day to a relaxed and cozy state of mind (perfect for sleeping).

Keep books tucked away in your car, in your travel bag, or in the kids? backpacks when you?re on the go. ?Books can be a wonderful way to spend time when you?re waiting for a doctor?s appointment, are stuck in traffic, or even when visiting with grandparents.?

And don?t forget the library. ?Your community library can become a family?s richest treasure! ?Make it a regular part of your weekly schedule to attend story time or just go to find a brand new series that the family can enjoy together, as well as individual reads that will excite your child and keep him coming back for new experiences throughout his lifetime.

No matter what type of book tickles your fancy, sit down with your kids and get reading.

Top 10 Reasons NOT to stage your home | Woodstock Ontario Real ...

This?wonderful article?was originally written by Janet Jones of?Hawaii Home Staging & Design?on Active Rain. It details all the reasons why home owners would choose NOT to stage their homes and make the selling process that much more difficult for themselves. Staging is one of the key tools a home owner has at their disposal which will make their homes stand out to buyers, both online and in person, so that they always sell faster and for what the properties are worth.1.??We want to test the market for 90 days or as we term it ?we want to wait and see how it goes?.? And?on the 91st day?? Price reduction-and realizing no matter what you do, you won?t get back in 90 days worth of potential buyers who have already eliminated your property. Ouch!2.??It costs too much money.?We have?neverseen a home where the?staging costs?would have?exceeded?the?first price reduction.??And that doesn?t even factor in the monthly carrying costs of the home.

3.??We can?t stage the house, we?re living in it.??One common misconception is that staging is?only for?vacant homes.? Every home/condo can be staged, and you can actually?live in it?after staging. A professional stager will give home owners great tips for keeping the home in show-ready condition ? and still live in it ? during the course of a consultation.

4.??We didn?t have to stage any of the other properties we sold over the years.?Yes, once upon a time you could generate three offers by 5 p.m. on the same day your Realtor put the For Sale sign in your yard.? Not now.??Buyers are picky and they have a lot of homes to choose from.?

?

?

5.??Everyone loves our house so buyers will love it, too.?? What you, your friends and relatives love about your house may not bewhat today?s buyer wants.??Sellers are often baffled by the feedback they get after showings-amazed that buyers have found things they don?t like about the property. ?We also know that friends & family aren?t always honest because they don?t want to hurt anyone?s feelings so relying on these subjective opinions instead of getting in a professional who is completely objective, often costs the seller both?extra time on the market and lost equity.

6.?We can clean the carpets and de-clutter without someone telling us how.??Yes, you can (and should) do this, but it is a?tiny piece of staging.? Do you know what separates? ?clutter? from ?asset?? ?Do you know how much to pack away and how much to keep out? Taking down everything so rooms are bare and sterile is almost as bad as messy, cluttered spaces. And what about all the other things that staging encompasses, like traffic flows, highlighting architectural features, updating, and appealing to your target market?

?

?

8.??The view alone will sell this place.??Then?why many months later are these great view homes/condos still on the market???Could it be that buyers want something to go with the view-like a comfortable, move-in ready home?

9.??We would rather let the buyers makes their own paint/flooring choices.??And that equals?a price reduction.? If buyers do make an offer on your home they will double or triple the cost of these items and reflect that in their discounted offer price-which includes a deduction for the inconvenience.

10.?Our home is professionally decorated.??Aprofessionally decorated home?is tailored to the owner?s particular needs.? Does it work for the new buyer?s needs? ?You could see #1 above . . . .

These are all great reasons-

  • for price reductions
  • for extended time on the market
  • for buyers not coming to look at your home
  • for buyers not coming back for a second look

There are dozens of reasons not to stage, but only one good reason to stage-getting your home sold faster for the highest possible price.? Staging is preparing your home for sale and creating a home that buyers?want to buy. We often ask our clients,??Are you prepared to do what it takes to sell your home??

If you want to be in the best competitive position in this market today, consult withRooms in Bloom Home Staging & Design Inc.before listing your property for sale.

5 Weeks Until Cyber Monday: 4 Ways to ... - Business 2 Community

The big deals, one-day discounts, mad rush and limited inventory: Black Friday and Cyber Monday can test even retail?s best, but a strong performance can bring huge results.

While some shoppers savor the excitement of early-morning lines, the National Retail Federation reports that 51.8% of U.S. consumers will be doing their holiday shopping online this year, up 5% from 2011 and the first time the annual survey has shown online shoppers as the majority. The NRF based its findings on an early-October poll of approximately 9,000 consumers who plan to spend an average of $750 each on holiday goods and services.

Mobile devices will play a strong supporting role in the online shopping surge. According to the survey, 52.9% of smartphone owners and 64.1% of tablet owners will use their devices to do research and make purchases. Shop.org forecasts that online holiday spending alone this year will amount to a whopping $92 to $96 billion.

So how can retailers maintain a merry and bright customer service reputation during the holiday rush? Take stock in these four customer service best practices:

1. Knowledge is power. Businesses can serve more customers faster simply by making answers to common questions readily available to their CSRs and customers. The use of an online knowledgebase which distributes information across numerous consumer touchpoints provides consistent and correct answers to both CSRs and customers, making service more efficient and reducing phone calls, emails and in-store lines through this self-service tool.

From store hours, promotions and at-a-glance shipping information to updates on the availability of featured or hot-ticket items, sharing consistent and current content online and through social media will keep even the just-hired, seasonal customer service staff on the same page, and save customers the frustration of long hold times or being disappointed by the unavailability of a product the store knew sold out days ago.

2. Delight with discounts. Price is the number one reason shoppers will abandon their favorite brand for a competitor, especially during the holiday. Close behind are delivery options. According to Comscore?s Online Shopping Customer Experience Study, at least 42 percent of online shoppers reported abandoning their shopping carts because of delivery timing estimates.

Put shipping specials, product promotions and discount offer information in a prominent place online. Make sure the content is also SEO friendly, and don?t forget to share on social media.

3. Re-engage the undecided and the frustrated. The average shopping cart abandonment rate is 66%, and MIT big data estimates that $1.4 trillion in merchandise was abandoned in online shopping carts last year. According to Shop.org, which is the National Retail Federation?s digital division, shopping cart ?abandoners tend to be more sophisticated online, better educated, and higher earners, so leaving a cart full while they go and look for a better deal is a simple and familiar process.?

Additional research shows that more than half of shopping cart abandoners make their purchase, either with the original brand or with a competitor, within the 24 hours that follow. Re-engaging these consumers with a reminder email once they leave your site, or a proactive live chat before they leave offering a today-only discount or shipping upgrade has been shown to significantly increase customer retention, as well as the amount of the purchase, as these shoppers are more likely to purchase other items at the same time in order to maximize postage efficiency.

In addition to undecided consumers, proactively engaging or re-engaging with customers who have paused for a long time during a shopping experience, or who have left due to frustration with an online experience, can do wonders for retention.

4. Create a seamless customer service experience. Even though holiday shoppers are frantically hunting for bargains, it?s an exceptional customer service experience that will keep them coming back after the holidays are over and have them recommending your brand to friends, family and social media connections. Blood chromosome differences are linked to pancreatic cancer

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? A new study shows that a blood marker is linked to pancreatic cancer, according to a study published October 23 by scientists at the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center and Mayo Clinic.

First author Dr. Halcyon Skinner, assistant professor of population health sciences at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, says the study is the first time pancreatic cancer risk has been linked to differences in telomeres' length in blood cells.

"This suggests a new avenue to identify those with pancreatic cancer or those at risk of developing the cancer in the future,'' he says.

Skinner's colleagues at Mayo Clinic took blood samples from more than 1,500 people -- 499 of them with a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and 963 of them cancer-free control subjects. Specifically, the scientists were interested in the length of the telomeres -- the end caps on chromosomes -- found in white blood cells. They found a direct relationship with the risk of pancreatic cancer: the shorter the telomeres, the more likely a person was to have pancreatic cancer.

Telomeres maintain the stability of genes, and are known to shorten with age as cells divide. People of the same chronological age can have vastly different telomere lengths. In other words, some people's cells can by viewed as biologically older than cells from other people the same age.

"We know that people with many factors that are classically unhealthy also tend to have shorter telomeres. Those who have had stressful lives, exposed to chronic inflammation, have poor glucose control or smoked cigarettes tend to have shorter telomeres, and that can set the stage for genetic damage,'' Skinner explains.

Shortened telomeres in the blood have already been associated with other types of cancer, including colon cancer.

"We found the same relationship with pancreatic cancer, and for the vast majority of our participants, there was a direct linear relationship," he says, "the shorter the telomere, the higher the likelihood of pancreatic cancer."

But because shorter telomere length is also associated with the development of other cancers and other diseases of aging, measurement of telomere length alone is not a specific marker for pancreatic cancer.

Dr. Lisa A. Boardman, of Mayo Clinic, who led the overall study, says that future studies need to address if telomere length and other markers of pancreatic cancer should be combined to create a test that could be used clinically.

Article is published in the American Journal of Physiology Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology

BETHESDA, Md. (October 22, 2012) A new study shows that both length of time and percentage of overall sleep spent in different sleep stages are associated with decreased metabolic rate, increased hunger, and increased intake of calories (specifically from fat and carbohydrates). The findings suggest an explanation for the association between sleep problems and obesity.

Researchers from St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital and Columbia University investigated the effects of sleep architecture on hunger to determine whether specific stages of sleep, rather than simple duration, would affect changes in appetite and food desires in healthy adults.

The article is entitled "Alterations in sleep architecture in response to experimental sleep curtailment are associated with signs of positive energy balance" (http://bit.ly/S69LsW). It appears in the online edition of the American Journal of Physiology Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology published by the American Physiological Society.

Methodology

Researcher Ari Shechter and colleagues designed a laboratory-based, randomized crossover study of 27 healthy adults between the ages of 30 and 45. Participants underwent two six-day periods of laboratory observationa "habitual sleep" phase, during which they were allowed nine hours to sleep, and a "short sleep" phase, during which they were allowed four hours to sleep. Each phase was separated by four weeks to ensure full recuperation from the short sleep condition and to ensure that women were observed at the same phase of their menstrual cycle under each condition. Sleep duration and composition were assessed using polysomnographic recording. The amount of time spent in each sleep phasestage 1, stage 2, slow wave sleep (or SWSstage 3 and 4 combined) and REM sleep was determined and expressed in minutes and as a percentage of total sleep time.

For the first four days in both phases, participants ate meals calibrated to meet their energy requirements for weight maintenance. On day four, participants were asked to rate their hunger and level of desire for different foods. Resting metabolic rate (RMR) was measured in the fasted state on day five, and participants were then allowed to select their own foods for the final two days. Researchers compared participants' sleep architecture in the short sleep and habitual sleep condition, and analyzed the relationships between their sleep architecture, RMR, food intake and appetite-satiety ratings.

Results

Shechter and colleagues found that, compared to habitual sleep length, the short sleep condition resulted in reductions in the duration and percentage of stage 2 and REM sleep and increased the percentage of total sleep time spent in SWS. Some of these changes were related to decreased RMR, increased feelings of hunger, and increased intake of calories, fat, and carbohydrate. Specifically, there was a positive association between stage 2 sleep duration and RMR, and an inverse relation between stage 2 sleep percentage and calories consumedi.e., the less stage 2 sleep, the lower RMR and more calories consumed. There was an inverse relationship between REM sleep duration and hunger, and an inverse relationship between the amount of stage 2 sleep and desire for sweet and salty food. Reduced percentage of sleep time spent in REM sleep, as well as SWS, was also associated with greater fat and carbohydrate intake.

Importance of the Findings

The results reinforce that sleep duration is important, but show that the composition of sleepthe time and percentage of overall sleep spent in each stage is also playing an important role in the relationship between sleep and obesity. "Any number of various factors like obstructive sleep apnea, certain drugs/medications, chronic exposure to short sleep duration, shift work, jet lag, and changes in the scheduling of the sleep episode, can affect sleep stage quantity and distribution," said Shechter. "Our data may provide an explanation for the greater obesity prevalence observed within some of these conditions."

Accounting News Roundup: Romney's "Big Idea"; Why Big 4 Audits ...

Romney's Tax Deduction Cap [WSJ]
[D]etails aside, the tax cap is a big idea, and potentially a very good one. The proposal makes economic sense to the extent that it helps to pay for lower marginal tax rates. Lower rates with fewer deductions improve the incentive for investing and taking risks based on the best return on capital rather than favoring one kind of investment (say, housing) over another. This would help economic growth. The idea may be even better politically. The historic challenge for tax reformers is defeating the most powerful lobbies in Washington that exist to preserve their special tax privileges. Among the biggest is the housing lobby that exists to preserve the mortgage-interest deduction?the Realtors, home builders, mortgage brokers and the whole Fannie Mae gang.?But don't forget the life insurance lobby (which benefits from the tax exclusion on the equity buildup in policies), the tax-free municipal bond interest lobby, the charitable deduction lobby and more. Each one will fight to the death to preserve its carve-out, which means that reformers have to engage in political trench warfare to succeed.?This is one reason President Obama wants Mr. Romney to be more specific: The minute he proposed to limit the mortgage-interest deduction, the housing lobby would do the Obama campaign's bidding by running ads against Mr. Romney's plan. Mr. Romney is right not to fall for this sucker play.

Which comes first: the partnership or the plan - CausePlanet.org

Our firm LaPiana Consulting works with dozens of organizations each year on planning: strategic planning, business planning, succession planning?you name it. We also specialize in strategic restructuring: mergers and other forms of partnership between and among nonprofit organizations. All nonprofits engage in the former, many in the latter. Our belief is an organization should never tackle one without giving serious consideration to the other.

Every nonprofit does at least some of its work in collaboration with others. Most could go further, however. Joint programming, back office consolidation, joint venture, merger, collaborative scaling, networked action, collective impact?there are many ways to increase impact by working with others. How and when should an organization plan for this? What kind of planning is called for? What should an organization tackle first? To answer these questions, we consider planning from three angles.

1. Planning as Catalyst

Strategic planning is the most common approach to strategy formation. Organizations also form strategy in ?real time.? The latter approach is a big focus of ours and the topic of one of our books, The Nonprofit Strategy Revolution: Real-Time Strategic Planning in a Rapid-Response World, which argues the environment is changing so rapidly, nonprofits need to be forming, evaluating, and updating strategy on an ongoing basis, not just every two, three, or four years, when the latest strategic plan expires.?

Regardless of the model used, strategy formation involves careful consideration of internal factors (mission, vision, business model, big questions) and external realities (trends, competitive landscape, market position, competitive advantage, need/demand). A single organization may begin a strategy formation process without any specific intent to partner, but the simple act of addressing the question, ?Is there any way in which partnership could allow us to better advance our mission?? may open doors to previously unrecognized opportunities.??

Succession planning is another opportunity to consider partnership. Succession planning is the ongoing process of defining the organizational roles and capacities needed for success and of identifying and developing personnel to prepare them to fill those roles as needed. It may also involve considering ?out of the box? responses to future leadership transitions. For example, ?Would sharing an Executive Director CFO/Director of Human Resources with another organization help us to be more efficient and effective as we go forward?? Here again the planning comes first, but when done well, includes consideration of future strategic restructuring options and opportunities.?

2. Planning to Inform Negotiations

While a formal planning process may lead to a decision to explore options for strategic restructuring, opportunities for partnership can and do arise at any time. Planning isn?t far behind, however, and is in fact an integral part of the negotiations process. Sometimes that planning is at a very high level: ?What is the programmatic scope of the partnership? How will [our combined effort] be structured, governed, managed, staffed, and financed? What will we continue to do independently?? In many cases, agreement on ?the basics? may be sufficient to secure agreement from all parties to move forward.?

In other cases, a potential partnership may be sufficiently complex as to require a full business planning process prior to a decision to move forward, either because of the number of parties involved, the complexity of the proposed business model, or the nature of the questions posed by key stakeholders such as board members or funders. The deeper dive of business planning allows those involved to develop, define and consider the parameters of an economically and operationally successful undertaking?and then make an informed decision based on the result.

3. Planning for Implementation

Once two or more organizations have agreed to work together, they must implement. In a straightforward partnership (a jointly developed education program for new parents, for example, or an agreement to share a CFO) an MOU and an action plan may be all that is needed. In a more complex or highly integrative partnership (a merger, perhaps, or newly-formed coalition of similarly-focused advocacy organizations) a full-fledged strategy formation process may be called for. Or, if the partnership is focused on starting or scaling something new, large, or high-risk, business planning may be appropriate. As with planning to inform negotiations, the opportunity for partnership may have arisen outside of a formal planning process, but a formal planning process will very often follow the decision to partner.

Have those leading your organization considered the possibility of partnership recently? If not, and you have a planning process coming up, consider including a discussion of how working with others could help you better advance your mission and achieve your vision. It is certainly an appropriate question at any time an organization is considering its future. For those occasions when the partnership opportunity comes first, get ready to jump into planning?together?for a whole new level of success.

89 comments - Oh No They Didn't! - LiveJournal

>

Last week, in this space, I broke the law. Technically, I could be prosecuted. Technically, my only hope is that Rowan Atkinson can get the law changed before a gloved hand knocks at my door.

My column about Elementary was one of the most-read articles on the Comment Is Free website for days. What an accolade, the casual observer might think. After all, we live in a serious world. Some girl's unenthusiasm for a TV series in which Sherlock Holmes is a New York junkie and Doctor Watson is a sexy lady from Charlie's Angels is not a serious matter. If thousands of web-surfers are poring over that column, what a tremendously entertaining piece it must be.

But no. It was not my creative writing that fascinated people, but my racism. And as a little sweetener, like sprinkles on an ice cream, my sexism. Ideologically, I am the new Bernard Manning. (Unfortunately, the resemblance doesn't end there.)

Many of the messages I've since received on Twitter have been accompanied by the hashtags #racist and #sexist and, in one charming case, #youdumbbitch. This is why I read with particular interest about Rowan Atkinson's launch of the Reform Section 5 campaign, to repeal that part of the Public Order Act that makes it a crime to use "abusive or insulting" words within earshot (or eyeshot) of anyone likely to be offended by them. I would quite like this section to be reformed, in time for me to swerve jail.

The sexism charge was nuanced; some believe that Lucy Liu's casting as "Doctor Joan Watson" is a positive step for women in Hollywood; I do not, and those who disagree think I must therefore be a misogynist. Fine; give me a couple of hours round a pub table and I'll have that debate with pleasure.

But the racism charge was based on the following two paragraphs, which appeared about halfway through my column:

"Lucy Liu [told] the Times, 'It was a very big deal for me to play an Asian-American in Charlie's Angels; Watson's ethnicity is also a big deal', as if someone had bet her ?100 that she couldn't cause at least three Conan Doyle fans to suffer a pulmonary embolism.

"Personally, I'd like to press Liu's face into a bowl of cold pea soup for that statement. It's not just her failure to distinguish between creating a new character and mangling a beloved old one (Tread softly! You tread on my dreams!), but the triumphant tone over such an appalling and offensive racial change. Let me be clear: I rather like the idea of an Asian Watson, but American? God save us all."

Now, I think it's fairly obvious that this is a silly joke about Americans, as imagined by a tweedy old fan of Victorian literature. It is not a difficult joke to spot. It's a standard structure: set up an expectation based on one half of a sentence (or, in this case, word), then say something based on the other half. As in: "My boyfriend's got a dog. I'm revolted by the hairiness and the smell. But I like his dog."

My furious online correspondents, however, reacted as though the last two sentences simply weren't there, managing somehow to take those lines as a statement of anti-Asian feeling. If I were more famous, the Daily Mail would have reported the complaints under the headline "COREN IN RACE ROW" and I would have been marked down forever as that woman who used to host a quiz show until her hatred of Asians was revealed and she was forced into hiding forever.

As it is, I will be remembered as a racist only by those too daft to get my silly joke, and those who saw the damning internet blogs that failed to quote exactly what I'd said.

Nevertheless, those people were genuinely offended. Some may be quite stupid ("How can you defend the BBC's male-dominated, all-white Sherlock?" asked one angry lady, the answer to which is so obvious that I couldn't be bothered to type it) ? but I deliberately allowed readers to believe for two seconds that I was about to make an anti-Asian statement, in the full knowledge that some people are stupid and that even so familiar and simple a comic U-turn might be too much for them. Technically, and illegally, I invited offence.

Last week, a caller to the Jeremy Vine show on Radio 2 said that Andrew Mitchell should be jailed for swearing at the police because "there is too little respect for them".

As someone who remembers from childhood the timid, furtive voices of east European cousins on the phone ? those few who had survived the concentration camps ? who dared not speak freely from behind the Iron Curtain because they feared being tapped and followed, I am extremely offended by the suggestion that my own beautiful British society should become a police state, in which rudeness to these authority figures is punished by incarceration. But do I think the caller should be jailed for offending me? No, I think there should be no such thing as a speech crime. However foul a thing you want to say, you can say it freely as far as I'm concerned. And I'm including the skinheads who shouted "Yid" at me during my grandfather's funeral.

Yet, even if you believe that offensive remarks should be proscribed by law, what about remarks that are misunderstood as offensive? It's nigh impossible to speak without any risk of misinterpretation, especially when mobs are out there looking to be outraged.

You don't have to support the campaign to reform Section 5. But one day, your teasing dig in a colleague's leaving card will be taken the wrong way; or your mobile phone comment will be misheard by passers-by in a crowded street; and then they will come for you.</blockquote>

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is both under and over diagnosed, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Oct. 19, 2012) ? Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is both under and over diagnosed. That's the result of one of the largest studies conducted on ADHD in the United States, published in the Journal of Attention Disorders.

A substantial number of children being treated for ADHD may not have the disorder, while many children who do have the symptoms are going untreated, according to the 10-year Project to Learn about ADHD in Youth (PLAY) study funded by the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention

"Childhood ADHD is a major public health problem. Many studies rely on parent reporting of an ADHD diagnosis, which is a function of both the child's access to care in order to be diagnosed, and the parent's perception that there is a problem," said Robert McKeown, of the University of South Carolina's Arnold School of Public Health, who led the South Carolina portion of the study.

"Further complicating our understanding of the prevalence of ADHD and its treatment is that the diagnosis often is made by a clinician who has little experience assessing and diagnosing mental disorders. As a result, ADHD is both under and over diagnosed," said McKeown, distinguished professor emeritus in the department of epidemiology and biostatistics.

The study, conducted between 2002-2012, was a collaborative research project with the University of South Carolina's Arnold School and School of Medicine and the University of Oklahoma's Health Sciences Center.

"To our knowledge, this is the largest community-based epidemiologic study of ADHD to date," McKeown said.

The study found that 8.7 percent of children in the community sample in South Carolina had enough symptoms to fit the ADHD diagnosis at the time of the initial assessment. The percentage was 10.6 in Oklahoma.

The report also revealed that the number of parents in the community sample who reported that their children were taking ADHD medication was 10.1 percent in South Carolina and 7.4 percent in Oklahoma. Yet, of the children taking ADHD medication, only 39.5 percent in South Carolina and 28.3 percent in Oklahoma actually met the case definition of ADHD.

"ADHD is not a snap diagnosis. It requires data from several sources and across several domains and considerable expertise to diagnose accurately and differentiate from other possible problems," McKeown said.

The CDC reports that ADHD is one of the most common neurobehavioral disorders of childhood. Often first diagnosed in childhood, ADHD affects a child's ability to do well in school and his or her ability to make and keep friends. While many children "outgrow" the disorder, ADHD can continue into adulthood, impacting the individual's ability to work and function in society.

McKeown said the study found that many children taking ADHD medication did not meet the ADHD diagnostic criteria.

"These children had more ADHD symptoms, on average, than the other comparison children. Many children meeting case criteria had not been previously identified and were not receiving medication treatment, suggesting that the condition remains underdiagnosed," he said.

The study was designed to follow children from elementary school through adolescence (ages 5 -- 13) and investigate the short- and long-term outcomes of children with ADHD. Teachers screened 10,427 children in four school districts across the two states where the study was conducted. ADHD ratings by teacher and parent reports of diagnosis and medication treatment were used to determine whether children were high or low risk for ADHD.

Study questions focused on the prevalence and treated prevalence of ADHD in children; the existence of other health problems in children with ADHD, and the types and rates of health risk behaviors in children with ADHD. The study also looked at treatment patterns, both past and current, of children with ADHD.

"The findings of our study suggest that a fair number of children are being treated who do not meet case criteria and that there are children who do meet criteria but are not being treated," McKeown said. "ADHD is not a snap diagnosis. It requires data from several sources and across several domains and considerable expertise to diagnose accurately and differentiate from other possible problems."

Children and adolescents with ADHD also were found to have high rates of other disorders, including oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder. They also were more likely to engage in risky or impulsive behaviors, he said.

"We will follow up on these initial reports as the children age to determine what, if any, changes have occurred in the symptom patterns, as well as in the types of health risk behaviors," McKeown said.

"We hope that this will shed light on the prevalence and the treatment of ADHD and will lead practitioners to seek consultation if they are not trained to assess, diagnose and treat ADHD," he said. "We also hope it will lead parents and practitioners to assess all the treatment options to determine what works best for each child."

USC researchers involved in the study included Dr. Steven Cuffe of the University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville, formerly of the USC School of Medicine; Arnold School doctoral student Lorie L. Geryk; and Matteo Botai of the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden and Joseph R. Holbrook of the CDC, both formerly at the Arnold School.
