OUR VIEW: Three cheers for the Operation Military Smiles toy giveaway

THUMBS UP to the second annual Operation Military Smiles toy giveaway, which was held on Saturday at Fall River?s National Guard Armory. The toy drive is a wonderful initiative founded in 2010 in Fall River by families whose sons were killed in Afghanistan and Iraq. It has since grown to other parts of the state, with 8,500 toys donated this year.
In addition to the many people who donated, there was one celebrity who lent his high-profile support this summer: country music star Trace Adkins.

The toy drive is ongoing at several locations, including Government Center, where unwrapped toys can be dropped off through mid-December. This is a wonderful way to honor the lives of Fall River?s brave sons lost in war, while also helping to bring smiles and brighten the holidays of Massachusetts military families.

THUMBS UP to the members of the new Holiday Fund 100 Club. Thanks to the boost of these generous donors who have contributed $100 or more, the Holiday Fund has already surpassed the $10,000 mark. The Holiday Fund benefits local families through the Salvation Army and Citizens for Citizens, which provide a variety of services to needy children and families throughout the year. No matter how large or small, your contributions to the Holiday Fund help people right here in our own communities.

THUMBS UP to the record number of Massachusetts voters who came out to vote in the Nov. 6 election. According to Secretary of State William Galvin, almost 3.2 million people ? 73.3 percent of the commonwealth?s 4.3 million voters turned out. That?s about 80,000 more than turned out for the 2008 election. And, to the commonwealth?s credit ? unlike in other states, including in Rhode Island, where numerous problems, including hours-long lines were reported due to the heavy turnout ? Election Day in Massachusetts was largely ?free of controversy or disruption.? It?s heartening to see the improving numbers of voters.

THUMBS UP to BayCoast Bank for making a generous $50,000 Community Service Grant to Fall River?s Henry Lord School in memory of a bank employee who suddenly died last year. Susan M. Medeiros was a bank vice president and treasurer who had a passion for helping others and supporting ?programs that help local students succeed,? BayCoast President and CEO Nicholas Christ said. The funding will help to establish a community center at Henry Lord in cooperation with People, Incorporated, with additional funding from Bristol Community College.
