Strauss-Kahn, French rape bid accuser meet

PARIS?? Former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn met in a face-to-face confrontation Thursday with a Frenchwoman who says he tried to rape her, as the two were questioned jointly by investigators deciding whether to pursue the case.

Strauss-Kahn quit as head of the International Monetary Fund and saw his chances for the French presidency evaporate after a New York hotel maid accused him of attempted rape in May.

The U.S. case was later dropped amid questions about the maid's credibility, but the maid, Nafissatou Diallo, has filed a civil suit. Strauss-Kahn claimed Monday he has diplomatic immunity and asked a New York court to dismiss the lawsuit.

French accuser Banon has also threatened to sue Strauss-Kahn if Paris prosecutors decide not to go forward with a criminal case against him.

One challenge for Banon's case is that the incident in question happened eight years ago.

Banon has defended her decision not to press charges against Strauss-Kahn at the time of the alleged incident. In 2003, she was 23 years old and Strauss-Kahn was an eminence grise of France's Socialist party.

Senator says "all options on table" on Pakistan (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The United States will have to consider all options "including defending our troops" in confronting Pakistani support for militant networks fighting U.S. soldiers in the region, a senator said on Sunday.

"We need to put Pakistan on notice," Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Republican member of the Armed Services Committee said on "Fox News Sunday."

U.S. military leaders said last week the Pakistani army's powerful ISI spy agency supported the Haqqani militant group that Washington blames for an attack on its embassy and other targets in Kabul, Afghanistan. Pakistan denied the allegations.

Graham said Pakistan has to choose between helping the Haqqani network and helping the United States fight al Qaeda in Afghanistan and border regions of Pakistan.

"The idea of Pakistan's intelligence agencies supporting terrorism as a national strategy needs to come to an end," Graham said.

"It destabilizes Afghanistan. They're killing American soldiers. If they continue to embrace terrorism as part of their national strategy we're going to have to put all options on the table, including defending our troops."

Graham said Washington should reconsider assistance to Pakistan and noted last week's approval by a Senate committee of $1 billion to Pakistan for counterterrorism operations. The panel made that and any economic aid conditional on Islamabad cooperating with Washington against militant groups, including the Haqqanis.

The senator did not elaborate on what U.S. military action he would advocate if the situation did not change.

"I am saying that the sovereign nation of Pakistan is engaging in hostile acts against the United States and our ally Afghanistan," he said.

Hailey, 40, tweeted that a flight attendant had told her that Southwest "was a 'family' airline and kissing was not ok," and that she and her companion were then "escorted off the plane for getting upset about the issue."

"SouthwestAir endorses homophobic employees," she tweeted. "Since when is showing affection towards someone you love illegal? I want to know what Southwest Airlines considers a 'family.'"

She went on to tweet: "Boycott SouthwestAir if you are gay. They don't like us."

Hailey, who starred on Showtime network's "The L Word" as Alice, a bisexual magazine writer and radio host, also demanded a public apology.

The airline issued a statement saying initial reports it received about the incident "indicate that we received several passenger complaints characterizing the behavior as excessive."

"Our crew, responsible for the comfort of all customers on board, approached the passengers based solely on behavior and not gender," the airline said. "The conversation escalated to a level that was better resolved on the ground, as opposed to in flight."

The statement concluded: "We regret any circumstance where a passenger does not have a positive experience on Southwest and we are ready to work directly with the passengers involved to offer our heartfelt apologies for falling short of their expectation."

An airline spokesman declined to comment beyond the prepared statement.

The incident comes a little over three weeks after another celebrity, Green Day rocker Billie Joe Armstrong, was complained he was booted from a Southwest flight in Oakland, California, because he was wearing his baggy pants too low.

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A series of blasts killed at least 10 people and wounded scores more Sunday in what a local Iraqi official called a sectarian strike on a holy Shiite city whose residents are still reeling from being targeted in a deadly bus hijacking in a Sunni region earlier this month.

Government officials said a total of four explosions struck the city of Karbala around 10 a.m. in a steady drumbeat over a five-minute period, meaning they likely were coordinated.

Black smoke rose over an Interior Ministry office in Karbala that issues ID cards and that was targeted by two bombs. Another blast hit near a house, cratering its walls and ceiling. And at least one explosion detonated about a half-mile from the city's gold-domed shrine to Imam Abbas.

Three government officials from Karbala ? provincial councilmen Mohammed al-Moussawi and Hussein Shadhan al-Aboudi, and parliamentarian Jawad Kadim al-Hassnawi ? said 10 people died in the blasts. The number of wounded people ranged from 40 to as high as 90. Conflicting casualty tolls are common in the confusion that immediately follows large attacks in Iraq.

"The aim of these explosions is to ignite the sectarian sedition after the killing 22 of Karbala residents in the Anbar desert two weeks ago," al-Aboudi said. "They also aim to destabilize the security situation in Karbala."

He was referring to a Sept. 12 strike on a bus of Shiite pilgrims from Karbala that was hijacked in Iraq's Sunni-dominated Anbar province as it headed to a shrine in Damascus, Syria. Gunmen dressed in military-style uniforms ordered 22 men off the bus and executed them in a remote desert area near the highway.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has been trying to tamp down tensions between officials in Karbala and Anbar since the hijacking. Four suspects are being held in the case, and al-Maliki's military advisers say at least some foreigners were among the plotters.

That attack alarmed Iraqi and U.S. security officials who are uneasily watching to see if stability will plummet while the American military continues withdrawing from the country. Under a 2008 security agreement, all U.S. troops are required to be out of Iraq by the end of the year.

But concerns about leaving behind partially trained Iraqi forces has spurred Washington and Baghdad to reconsider the deadline, although no agreement yet has been reached to keep U.S. troops in Iraq beyond 2011.

Shiites were not the only victims of violence in Iraq on Sunday. In the city of Ramadi, the provincial capital of Anbar, two roadside bombs planted near the house of a local Sunni tribal chief killed one person. Police said the first blast also wounded a girl, and four policemen were injured in the follow-up explosion that detonated as security officials arrived at the scene.

Karbala, located 55 miles (90 kilometers) south of Baghdad, is one of the holiest cities in Muslim Shiism because two imams ? Abbas and Hussein ? are buried there. Initial casualty reports said three policemen were killed in Sunday's attacks on the city, and eight more were among the wounded. Al-Hassnawi said at least one of the blasts appeared to target police and rescue teams who rushed to the government ID office after the first explosion.

Raed al-Assali, a government employee in the Karbala Investment Council, said he was sitting in his office doing paperwork when he heard the booms.

"I rushed to rooftop of our building and I saw thick smoke rising from the blast area," al-Assali said. "Some people in panic were running in the nearby alleys in order to escape fire and danger."

Al-Assali noted growing tensions and fear by Karbala residents that they are being targeted by Sunni insurgents.

"There's a feeling here that some groups are trying to ignite sectarian sedition by targeting Karbala after the crisis with Anbar," he said, referring to the slaying of the pilgrims.

VidyaMandir Public School Sector 15, Faridabad conducted 21^stDistrict Badminton Championship from 3^rd to 6^th august 2011organised by Faridabad District Badminton Association. Sh. Anand Gupta was the tournament chairman, Sh. Anand Mehta was the president, Sh. K. CKarantak was the chief referee.

It was an open tournament in which more than 2000 players participated under different categories. Categories under which players played were under 13, under 15, under 17, under 19 and 25+. Students from all over the school in Faridabad participated and under Men and Women category also players participated from Faridabad District only. It as an open tournament so any person can register and there was no such qualification round or criteria for that which made it a more exciting tournament as it brought out new talents and it was a great encouragement for any person to participate in a sporting event and be the part of it.

Tournament started on 3^rd August in the morning from 9 am and it went on to till 10 pm in the evening. On the following days of the tournament same timing was followed and lot many matches were played one by one. On the last day of the tournament closing ceremony was performed and chief guest Mr. Kaushik Anand MLA, Haryana were present. The chief guest awarded prizes to the players. Mr. Anand Mehta, ?Principal of the school, including many school teachers and head teachers were present during the occasion. Students from various school showed lot of enthusiasm during the tournament and they were the highlight of the event.

Manav Rachna International University also presented its players in the tournament and they showed their presence. They again proved there quality and top standard of play.

Physiotherapists from the Faculty of Applied Sciences were present for the appropriate purpose. Following are the persons:-

Attention is neither a commodity nor a currency, even thought the Web treats it that way.

It is fashionable nowadays to talk about personal attention as a commodity or a currency. Many companies are looking for ways to automate the act of "paying attention" to individual customers on a grand scale, even as many of them also confuse attention with intention (to buy). "Attention" is becoming more interesting now that the Internet makes it easier to measure it.

But attention is neither a currency nor a commodity. It can, to some extent, be bought and sold. But it cannot be traded to third parties, and it is not entirely fungible.

While companies (and some people) seek attention because they expect to earn money through it, many individuals value attention as something that is intrinsically desirable. Just as Facebook "friends" come in varying degrees of intensity, quality, and symmetry, so does attention. Real attention comes from people; "attention" from a computer is worth something only to the extent that it appears to come from a human?and can be negative if people feel deceived.

Basically, attention has three quantifiable aspects: time, completeness, and value. Start with one person paying full attention to another for 15 minutes. That is your spouse listening to you, for example (if that ever happens), or Juan on a date with Alice.

Now consider how that attention is divided. Is Juan talking to Alice, but looking at the woman at the next table or thinking about the deal he's working on? If so, only Juan knows how much attention he is allocating to Alice and how much to other things. (But Alice can guess!) Any speaker addressing an audience is getting the sum of the partial attention of its members, while giving each of them only a small share of her own.

But what is the value of this attention? Determining this depends on who is giving it and who is receiving it. Juan and Alice exchanging attention may or may not be a fair trade, depending on their relative "value": Is Alice extraordinarily beautiful? Is Juan amazingly rich or powerful (per Henry Kissinger's notion of power as the ultimate aphrodisiac)? Does Alice want Juan's attention?

One way to measure the value of attention is to look at actual transactions. Take Kissinger: Would he show up to speak to you alone? Probably not. How many people would he require in a room? Perhaps 1,000 people, paying $2,995 each. But he might also show up for free to talk to 10 heads of state, or one U.S. president. That gives you some indication of value, though it is hardly exact.

Indeed, the value of attention can be monetized, and a contract requiring someone to pay attention (by, say, giving a speech or appearing at a photo opportunity) can be bought and sold. At a less exalted level, we buy and sell attention all the time, usually as part of some other transaction. You pay extra in a department store for the attention of a sales clerk, and you pay extra to fly first class not just for the legroom and the drinks, but also for the extra attention from check-in personnel, flight attendants, and other people in line (if you care about their deference). That kind of attention can be valued by looking at the premium that people pay for it.

The Internet is changing the economics of attention by fostering peer-to-peer interactions. People used to pay attention to those around them and to "stars." Now, they spend lots of time online paying attention to people they haven't met. And, increasingly, individuals go online to get attention, not to give it. Accordingly, companies need to learn how to give customers the attention that they crave, rather than demanding customers' attention and then charging them extra for the attention that their brand commands.

Again, much of this attention is measurable, at least superficially, by watching people's online behavior. The normal rough economic calculations apply: Who online gets most attention vs. who gives it?

Companies are now busily developing metrics for attention: the number of Twitter or Google+ followers or Facebook friends; reputation points for being a good seller, buyer, or reviewer; Klout? scores; game-player status; and so on. Individuals value these scores, but not because they want to buy or sell them (in general, they cannot). They value them in part because they want to draw more attention to themselves, from more valuable people. But, in part, they just value the status itself.

In response, many companies are now beginning to provide metrics to their customers for their behavior vis-?-vis that particular vendor. Consider airline points, for example: roughly one-third of them are never cashed in; people value the status and the attention they earn more than the supposed "actual" value. But they do pay for them, by favoring one vendor over another.

Thus, what companies are creating is not so much new currencies that can be traded but new value systems for earning attention and recognizing (paying attention to) individual status. Each is mostly self-centered. You can move your friends from, say, Facebook to Google+, but the value earned in World of Warcraft or on American Airlines doesn't count for much elsewhere.

The question for companies is the extent to which those virtual rewards are translated back into purchasing behavior (and the ability to command higher prices). The question for individuals is this: What do you really value?a company's points, a salesperson's paid-by-the-hour attention, or a friend's genuine sympathy? Your answer?how and to whom you want to allocate your finite attention?will increasingly attract the attention of others.

Thai club owner sentenced for deadly New Year fire (AP)

BANGKOK ? A court has sentenced a nightclub owner and a lighting effects company executive to three years' imprisonment each for a fire that killed 67 people in the Thai capital on New Year's Day of 2009.

The Bangkok Criminal Court found Santika nightclub owner Wisuk Sejsawat and company executive Boonchu Laosinart guilty of causing the deaths of other persons without intent.

More than 1,000 revelers were inside the club when an indoor fireworks display set off after the countdown to New Year ignited the blaze. More than 100 people were injured.

The court also ordered Boonchu's company to pay 8.7 million baht ($255,500) in compensation to the victims or their families.

Four other persons were acquitted.

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) ? Viewers stunned by Rob McElhenney's deliberate, 50-lbs weight gain in last night's "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" season premiere might be even more in awe of this: He's lost most of it already.

McElhenney, who took five months to gain the weight, has lost about 30 lbs in the last two months. We checked in with him about his weight loss while talking about -- yep, you guessed it -- weightier matters, including how his show has become a model for every other comedy on FX.

"I got up to 212 and now I'm down to 182," said the actor, who normally weighs around 162. "For me and my metabolism it was simple. If I wanted to gain weight I needed to eat a lot more, and if I wanted to lose weight I had to eat a lot less, and work out. Believe me, it's not easy."

McElhenney gained the weight to mock the vanity of his character, Mac, and because he was sick of seeing sitcom stars get better-looking as their shows age.

He has no regrets about becoming the first actor to make a "Raging Bull"-sized commitment for a TV comedy. The first part of the new season, especially, makes the most of Mac's new size. Look for his character to try to cover up in Hawaiian shirts in future episodes.
